Windows 7 RTM Cracked With OEM License Key

Windows 7 RTM Cracked With OEM License Key

Well, that didn't take long.Hehehehe....

With every release of Windows is the inevitable race by the pirate community to crack it. Even with activation schemes, which make things considerably more challenging, hackers were able to find a way to activate Windows Vista with a special OEM key. This very same hack has now made its way to activate Windows 7 RTM.

Such a key allows OEMs to pre-activate machines – something definitely not meant for the consumer market. The OEM activation system relies on a special BIOS that identifies itself to Windows. A software hack is all that's required to fool Windows into thinking that any machine is an authorized one that can be activated using the OEM license key.

The OEM license key this time around was extracted from a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD image from Lenovo, which contained the data that hackers needed to make the activation tools.

This type of hack is particularly difficult for Microsoft to stop because it means that it would lock out and greatly inconvenience Windows 7 integration processes already underway at one of its OEM partners – in this case, Lenovo.

Microsoft wasn't able to block out the OEM BIOS hack for Windows Vista until it released Service Pack 1, leading us to suspect that the same could apply for Windows 7.

iPhone Library CollectsXfers Personal Info

According to SlashGear, an Apple iPhone developer has discovered that at least one third-party iPhone library, provided by Pinch Media, is tracking owner data by recording the location of the user when specific apps sharing the library are launched. The library also records physical consumer movements and other data while the application is open.

To make matters worse, more than one application accesses this library including Camera Zoom and Twitterfon. As reported by SlashGear, the library does not provide end-users means of monitoring or shutting off the tracking, nor does it ask the user for permission when the applications are installed. Additionally, the library will continue to gather data as long as the application is in use. If the iPhone or iPod Touch is offline, the library will continue to collect--and cache--the data until a connection is made.

Here's list of information the library gathers:

- iPhone’s unique ID
- iPhone Model
- OS Version
- Application version (in this case, camera zoom 1.x)
- If the application is cracked/pirated
- If your iPhone is jailbroken
- time & date you start the application
- time & date you close the application
- your current latitude & longitude
- your gender (if facebook enabled)
- your birth month (if facebook enabled)
- your birth year (if facebook enabled)

Is this considered spyware? The fact that the library collects personal data without the end-user's consent should justify the label, however apparently some developers disagree with the branding. Still, acquiring Facebook information lends more towards the "unnecessary information" side of data collection, and should be considered suspicious.

Hackers to Reveal iPhone Security Hole Thursday

Hackers to Reveal iPhone Security Hole Thursday

Hackers suggest that you turn off your iPhone if you get a suspicious text message.

Earlier this month we learned about a critical security flaw has been found in the SMS system for the iPhone that could remotely crash the device with a single text message.

It's believed that the security hole could pave the way for an attacker to run malicious code on the iPhone that would allow it to access the GPS, microphone or internet connection.

The security bug is unusual for the iPhone as most applications on the device run inside their own sandboxes, which should restrict them from tapping into portions of the device that it shouldn't be accessible. But for one reason or another, the SMS function isn't as protected and could give an attacker root access.

The security experts have already shared their findings with Apple, but the company has yet to release a patch or even indicate that a patch is on the way.

Whether Apple is ready or not, Mac OS X security experts Charlie Miller and Colin Mulliner plan to reveal the security hole plan on Thursday at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas.

If Apple doesn't release a patch soon, iPhone users should be on guard against receiving a text message containing a single square character.

"This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn off your phone," Miller told Forbes. "Someone could pretty quickly take over every iPhone in the world with this."

Stay tuned for an update tomorrow.
